“Tehachapi,” Simon Studer Art, Geneva, Switzerland

February 8th - March 8th, 2024

The Tehachapi exhibit at Simon Studer Art in Geneva tells the story of JR’s intervention in the maximum security prison in California over the last five years in an array of mediums. JR’s first project in the prison, The Yard, for which he photographed and recorded audios of 48 current and formerly incarcerated men, prison staff, and victims, is shown as a photographic triptyque.

The exhibit also includes Picnic as an ink transfer on reclaimed barn wood, photographs of a ballerina dancing in the prison on paper blocks, and photographic works of The RoadThe Road and Mountain.

To mark the exhibition's opening, JR's latest documentary Tehachapi was screened for the first time in Switzerland. The film offers a vivid glimpse of the process behind creating the installations and  reveals the impact the art had on participants. It first premiered at the Telluride Film Festival this past fall.
